Before you start shopping for your wedding dress, you've probably composed a good sized wish list about how you want your dress to look. The average bridal shop only allows appointments that are one hour. Eventhough one hour is enough time to try on wedding dresses, you should narrow down your options before your appointment. This will make your shopping experience much more easier and pleasant.
Since there are so many styles of wedding dresses to choose from, it can be very easy for a bride-to-be to become overwhelmed quickly when trying to make desicions about a dress. There are a few things that you can decide before your actual appointment day to alleviate some of the stress. The first way to narrow your options is by choosing the right silhouette for your body type. When you do this, you want to choose a dress that highlights your best features and conceal any problem areas. First, figure out which body type your are: plus size, petite, busty, lean / straight (athletic build) or hourglass. Keep in mind that most women do not fit into one particular body type and you probaby won't either, but choose a body type that is closest to yourself.
Next, I would suggest going to a store that sells formal dresses and try on a few silhouettes to make sure you are comfortable wearing that style of gown. For example, you may have large hips and you would think that a ballgown or an A-line skirt might fit you the best. Go to Macy's or Nordstrom's and try on some formal dresses with a ballgown skirt or an A-line skirt to see which one you like the most. Also, another good idea to do while your there is to try on dresses that are white, ivory, blush or champagne to see which color dress that you would prefer. If you establish which style of dresses you are comfotable wearing ahead of time, you will use your appointment time more productively.
There are a few more things that you can do to make your wedding dress shopping experience go as smooth as possible. Trust your consultant and be open to trying on some dresses that she suggests even if the style is a little out of your comfort zone. Wear (or bring) the appropriate undergarments such as nude colored underwear and a strapless bra. If you have a bra that can convert to strapless, one shoulder, etc that would be even better because you'll probably try on dresses that are made differently at the top. Only bring people with you that are positive and supportive the day of your appointment. Leave any negative people at home. Finally, do your hair and makeup that day. It will be easier to envision what you will actually look like when trying on dresses if you look your best!
